Bazura BagsMade in the Philippines in fair-trade Bazura Bags is working with a woman's co-op in the Philippines that set up a Livelihood Project assisted by the local village council. With almost no capital, the women found a very cleaver way to support themselves. Every day, children from the local schools collect over 50,000 used drink containers called doy packs, then sell them to the co-op. The packs are sanitized and the women sew them together into attractive, durable bags. Unlike most third world factory workers toiling away in sweatshops, these women are entrepreneurs and shareholders. They work for themselves and have a positive impact on their community and, at the same time, they encourage environmentalism. It is estimated that millions of these containers get thrown in the trash everyday in the Philippines. Until a way is found to recycle them, or stop using this material altogether, Bazura Bags will continue to reuse as many empty drink containers as possible and, in the process, support fair-trade. Bags come in a large variety of styles and sizes, including messenger styles, backpacks, market bags, totes, handbags, wallets and coin purses. Prices range from $6-$65. |
